EV home charging cost formula and worked example

Formula

daily cost = (daily miles รท mi/kWh รท charger efficiency ร— $/kWh) ร— 1.1

where charger efficiency is the wall-to-battery ratio as a decimal (0.90 = 90%), and the real-world buffer accounts for battery conditioning and cable losses

Worked example

A driver covers 40 miles a day in an EV rated at 3.5 mi/kWh, charging on a Level 2 charger that is 90% efficient, paying a flat $0.15/kWh.

  1. Energy delivered to the battery: 40 miles รท 3.5 mi/kWh = 11.43 kWh
  2. Energy drawn from the wall: 11.43 kWh รท 0.90 charger efficiency = 12.70 kWh
  3. Daily cost: 12.70 kWh ร— $0.15/kWh ร— 1.1 real-world buffer = $2.10
  4. Annual cost: $2.10 ร— 365 days = $764.76

Result

Charging 40 miles per day at $0.15/kWh with a 90%-efficient charger costs about $2.10 per day, or $764.76 per year.
